In my earlier messages, I have been encouraging members to come forward to serve our community as volunteers. I am pleased that members are responding well to this call. Some, however, have approached me and mentioned the lack of programmes to cater to those among us who are more comfortable speaking in Mandarin, local Chinese dialects, Malay or even Tamil.

It gives me joy to see members taking part in RSVP’s voluntary programmes. In our last AGM, I spoke about the need for more members to step up and serve our community. As an organization of volunteers, we must do more. We have over 1000 members but less than a third regularly participate in our programmes and voluntary work. I have often wondered why this is so.

The government’s recent package to recognise and take care of Singapore’s Pioneer Generation (PG) must have touched the hearts of many RSVP members. Indeed, more than half of our members are 65 years old and above. I am very happy for all our PG citizens. They contributed significantly to make Singapore the success that it is today. Congratulations for a well-deserved recognition.

A Happy New Year to all!
2013 has been a very eventful year for me with several firsts – my official appointment as President, new initiatives, a Gala Charity dinner and a grand Volunteer Appreciation Night. As we begin the New Year, we have much work to do and will share more as we progress into the year. I would like to formally thank all our volunteers who have given much of their time in support of RSVP and its programmes which have benefited many in the community. A special “Thank you” to all donors and partners in service and friends who believe in the mission of RSVP. A note of thanks to the staff of RSVP for their hard work to ensure the smooth progress of the organisation and its programmes.
I look forward to a challenging 2014.

Silver IT Care Helpdesk came into effect on 1 October. The two hotlines Tel: 6485 6113 and 6485 6134 are operational from 10am to 4pm (Mon to Fri). This helpdesk/helpline aims to help seniors by providing guided IT advice and other basic computer housekeeping and trouble-shooting approaches. This is the first level of assistance to seniors and if this proves to be ineffective, these seniors can bring in their faulty computers to RSVP at Bishan Junction 8 where trained senior volunteers can further troubleshoot and fix the problems. The phone has not stopped ringing since the press publicity on 21 September. We have received more than 50 enquires just in the first week of October alone. In addition, 3 seniors came in with their computer/laptops for assistance.

Our Gala Charity Dinner held in May was a success. I am thankful to all members for supporting this event wholeheartedly. We were able to raise $370,000. On behalf of all of us in RSVP, I wish to record our appreciation to Mr. Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, for gracing the occasion.
