Volunteering with RSVP since 2009

In 2008, I read about the Silver Infocomm Day held at Singapore Polytechnic in the newspaper. With an interest to pick up IT skills then, I came to RSVP Singapore to register for the Basic Computer course. Subsequently, I began taking up computer courses at RSVP. After a year of learning, I realised that I’m actually quite comfortable with IT and I enjoy sharing what I have learnt with others.

So why do I volunteer? I am a housewife and my priority has always been my family. When my son started his Secondary 4 studies, I knew it was time for me to do something I like. In 2009, I started volunteering as an Assistant Trainer in RSVP’s cyberguide programme teaching fellow seniors IT skills. It was a joy sharing my knowledge with others. 3 years later, I started helping in the PC maintenance for the computers in RSVP’s IT labs. Today I am still actively involved coming in at least 3 times a week.

Besides being able to help others, I have also bonded closer with my son because of my newly acquired IT knowledge. Very often, we go shop for IT gadgets together and I’m proud to be a hip mom.

We always say live life to the fullest! Being a volunteer has been very fulfilling and rewarding for me. And I hope more seniors will come forth to volunteer. Start volunteering on activities that you like. As you volunteer, you will meet people from all walks of life. By sharing your life experiences with others, you become a true active ager, living life to the fullest.
